  【Abstract】This paper attempts to explore the distinctive roles of the teachers and students in communicative English classroom.

  I. Introduction
  In traditional English classroom, the teacher is the authority of the class, However, In communicative classroom, language is thought to be an abstract system used for human communication and a tool in social activities.
  II. The roles of teachers and students in traditional English Classroom and its limitations
  In traditional English class, knowledge of English is transmitted through the teacher who acts as “an authority, a knowledge-giver and moral example.”1 The students are passive receivers of knowledge and they mainly learn through repetition and memorization.
  III. The roles of teachers and students in communicative English classroom
  The roles of teachers in communicative English are as follows:
  The organizer
  In the communicative English classroom, the teacher must design proper class activities before class to stimulate students’ interest in study English.
  IV. Conclusion
  English is a tool for communication, the ultimate goal of learning English is to make use of English and get the ability to communicate in English. The teacher should promote classroom activities and take advantage of communicative English teaching. Students are the subject of class,they are encouraged to take risks and express their ideas in a creative way.
